Those Wedding Vow Blues
Writing your own wedding vows can be a wonderful way to express openly how you feel about your spouse to be. It is a declaration of love, your hopes, and dreams of your future together, and a statement of your commitment to one another. Unique wedding vows can be poetic, sincerely written admissions of love that are sometimes hard to get through without shedding a tear or two and in general getting all choked up. Most of all, they can be a beautiful thing for all who witness them. Seeing two people who are madly in love with one another exchange-wedding vows captures your heart and makes you smile.
However, they can be very difficult to write. If you have ever tried to write what you feel down on paper or type those feelings into a word processor, then you already know how difficult it can be. If you have not tried this yet, you do not have to be getting married to discover how much fun and how challenging this can be.
Get a piece of paper and a pen or pencil and write down how you feel right now. What emotions are you experiencing? Describe in detail exactly what you feel and try to be completely honest. If you did this, you probably found yourself struggling with the exact words you needed to get across confidently, the emotions you feel just sitting and thinking. Now think about someone you love, and try to describe the way they make you feel. When they walk into a room, do you light up? Does your heart skip a beat when they look at you, say your name, touch you lovingly?
It is easier to do when you lose yourself in the thoughts you have for someone you love. The best trick you can use to accomplish this task is to put your thoughts down in a poetic, singsong way, then go back, and extract the feeling from what you have written. Trying to write poetry is hard unless you are writing about something or someone about which you are passionate. Then it becomes just a little bit easier.
Okay, you have written about your feelings about a loved one in a poetic way. Then you went back and wrote down the feelings that came through in the poetic verse. Now take those feelings and shape them as if you were writing a story. Begin your story with I promise to…and then describe what you want to do for the person that you love. Do you want to take care of them and see to it that they never suffer? Will you vow to keep them from harm? Will you hold them when they are sad and laugh with them when they are happy? Do you want to be there to wipe away every tear and rejoice in every triumphant moment? If you followed these simple yet hard steps, you now have a vow that will move him or her to tears.
Once you and your beloved have exchanged your wedding vows, there is usually not a dry eye in the chapel. Some of your guests will sit there with their wedding favors or unique wedding favors in hand and cry right along with you. That is one of the things that a personally written wedding vow can do. It is a powerful and moving part of the ceremony because it is so honest and so much in the moment of love and promised togetherness. It just does not get any more tender that that.
